"A calling of men" and "killing us softly"

1. “ A call to men “ Is mainly about the misunderstanding of what being a men is. Tony porter talks about how men view themselves and women. He used the example of a man’s box as an example of the socialization of a men where men believe they don’t cry, they don’t act like women, and where their never to show fear nor weakness ever, and how women are weak and just objects of men particularly sexual objects Tony Porter says. For instance, he used his own life experience where his brother passed and his dad show no type of emotions till all the women leave the car and busted out in tears. This shows how he didn’t want to be seen like a women if he cried on front his family, but Tony Porter spoke how he was in shock because he couldn’t hold it but he cried in front of him and apologize because he cried on front of him how these believes man have, have them all trap. Tony Porter’s whole speech really had to do with the concept of how men are viewed in the world how they have these specific set of value and norms that they should always take in consideration. How these value and norms men give themselves as well can hurt then for instance, when he spoke about how when his daughter would cry he would babies her and when his son will cry he will send him to the room and tell him to get himself together. This make the whole man box tradition something that will for ever stay around because till this day man boys still believe that they don’t cry and they should always be tough.

2. “ Killing us softly “ Is mainly about the bad look advertisement has been giving us women for many years now. How the concept of what a women worth is, is completely misunderstood. For instance, the way us women are now used as objects, how our bodies are used in advertisement to sell about anything like perfume, watches, and even man perfume. A women’s is dismember in the advertisement industry she said. In the “killing us softly” she shows how women are shown to be powerless and used as objects and not given no self worth. She explains how the culture we live in today are giving the young women’s and teens the wrong idea of what a women is with these advertisement for instance, these advertisement has both women and teens thinking that being beautiful is if you wear make up, if your really skinny etc. so what does that make all the other girls. It even makes the women think they need a women think that they need a man in there life to survive. The whole idea given of the video is that women’s norms and believes are being shaped in such a cruel way because of these advertisement making all women weak and powerless because it makes us all think they we are all objects and that they’re all true because it makes us women think they have to live by what these advertisement say because it tell us what we are and what we should be.

3. Both of these video’s “A call of men” and “Killing us softly” both relate to the socialization chapter because the socialization chapter speaks about every individuals ways of growth, the way everyone have different norms, believes, and value. Where in both these video’s they speak of both men and women values and the way society and people view one another. It also relates to the chapter because the chapter also speaks about the mass media in which really relates to the “killing us softly” video because the advertising give teens and many women the wrong idea of one’s self worth. In the chapter you can see how they explain that the mass media is a agent of socialization from childhood right through adulthood. Both these video’s also relate to the chapter because they are a great example that proves that we all learn from our surrounding. For instance, kids when there in a young age you can see how they copy what an adult say and play doctor and pretend they are other people. Another example could be like when one see’s another person get rewarded for something good they have done a instant action another person will take is to go and do the same so that they can get rewarded. Gender socialization has a lot to do with all it all and it’s a great example of “A call to men” because it helps understand why boys think that should be tough and “killing us softly” because it shows how a women is always quiet and innocent and if she rough or aggressive she is known to be a tomboy. Both these video’s are great example of the socialization chapter because it helps us see more clearly how socialization take place throughout your whole life. How it’s a formal instruction but also usually is a socialized informal behavior and reaction observed by others.

Society

Society is full of many different culture in which there's many different beliefs. After, just a couple weeks in this class I can't help but notice all the different culture that surrounds me when I'm on the train, bus or just simply walking. Society is both order and chaos, at first I thought it was just complete chaos because I wasn't really seeing the big picture, but it's really both society has its way having the community and everyone in Order and then again it has it's way of having it all it complete chaos. What you think?

Society

Before taking this class I viewed society in a totally different way. I thought was just the people that are around which I don't know and I don't care about. Now I see it completely different because it's much more then, society is the different culture we all have, the values and the principles of the different ways I see society.
